    April 23, 2014 Meeting
Dr. Gary P. Carver

The Beltsville Garden Club will meet on Wednesday, April 23, 2014, at 7:30 p.m. in the multipurpose room at the James E. Duckworth School, 11201 Evans Trail, in Beltsville, Md.

In his talk,

“Return of The American Chestnut”

Dr. Gary P. Carver, board member of The American Chestnut Foundation and former president and current vice president of the Maryland Chapter of TACF, will describe the devastation that occurred with the loss of the American Chestnut tree, the importance of restoring this species, and current research and breeding programs. His presentation will include hands-on examination of leaves, nuts, burs, sections of stems with cankers, and blocks of chestnut wood.
The American chestnut tree was the dominant tree in eastern forests until early in the last century when it fell victim to an invasive fungus disease that decimated its population. Vast stretches of forest were destroyed. This led to not only environmental havoc, but also economic and cultural disaster throughout Appalachia.
In what will be a precedent-setting success in restoring a tree species, multiple efforts are underway to return the magnificent American chestnut to our forests. Please join us to hear the latest research on this important topic.

Refreshments will be served after the meeting. Bring a plant, or plant related material for the club’s door prize table. The public is welcome and admission is free.
