January 23, 2013 Meeting – Robert Howell, Ph.D.

Our speaker this month is long-time BGC member Robert Howell, PhD speaking about the evolution of his nearly 20 year old vegetable and fruit garden. The talk is entitled

“HOW TO CONQUER BAMBOO; HOW TO CONTROL SMALL ANIMALS; HOW TO GROW A GREAT GARDEN; Bonus: CHRYSANTHEMUMS”.

Dr. Howell has been a member of BGC since 1972 and is a past President of the club. He was employed at USDA from 1967 to 1993 and investigated plant stress problems, air pollution, drought and plant pathogens. He is a graduate of the University of Maryland Agronomy Department.

Bob accepted the challenge of creating a vegetable garden near his Beltsville home from a large stand of bamboo the year he retired in 1993. To protect tender plants from voracious small animals, he devised a multi-tiered fence. He will share his ‘how to’ grow a great garden.

As a bonus, he will give us an update on his passion for chrysanthemums which dates back to 1968 when he joined the Potomac Chrysanthemum Society, subsequently becoming a Master Judge in national and local shows. Dr. Howell will be bringing order forms for anyone interested in ordering Chrysanthemums for fall 2013.
